ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — A 21-year-old man and a boy were both shot while in a car in Elizabeth City Tuesday, police said.

Elizabeth City Police officers responded to a call from Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in reference to a man who walked into the emergency department with a gunshot wound, police said.

When officers arrived, they found a man with non-life-threatening injuries, and they determined that he was driving a vehicle, police said.

Officers found a crime scene at the intersection of Brooks Avenue and Ehringhaus Street, and they found a second victim, a boy who was a passenger in the vehicle during the shooting, police said.

The hospital was under lockdown for nearly two hours following the shooting.

“When a gunshot victim arrives in an Emergency Department, it’s fairly common for there to be a lockdown to ensure the safety of everyone present,” according to a statement from Sentara Health. “Once the situation is determined to be safe, normal operations resume. Tonight a lockdown was in effect at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center from roughly 8:05 p.m. until roughly 9:54 p.m.”

Elizabeth City Police are investigating the incident, and they urge anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 252-335-4321 or the Crime Line at 252-335-5555. They can also text a tip to 252-390-8477.
