DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Officials confirmed a Virginia Beach teen died after a crash Saturday afternoon on the Wright Memorial Bridge in Currituck County.

Local authorities responded to the crash around 3 p.m. on the eastbound lanes, in which the teen’s Jeep caught fire after flipping.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says the crash was due to a mechanical issue with the rear axle on the Jeep, which caused a wheel to separate from the vehicle.

Police did not identify the 17-year-old victim, but 10 On Your Side learned it was Conner McGrevy. McGrevy’s father, Shannon McGrevy, was also in the vehicle at the time. He was treated for burns at the hospital.

No other details have been released, but a GoFundMe has been set up for the family to help with funeral and memorial expenses.
