GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — The Gates County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about a widespread scam.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scammer is using a program that fraudulently displays the Gates County Sheriff’s Office phone number on caller ID.
Scammers use the real names of Gates County Sheriff’s deputies to falsely claim that a warrant has been issued for the person and a payment must make an online in order to prevent arrest.
The Gate’s County Sheriff’s Office wants citizens to remember:
- They will never ask you to pay online to make a warrant go away
- They will never call and ask for money under any circumstance
- If it does not seem right, please contact our office to verify the legitimacy of the call.
Anyone who is unsure about the legitimacy of a call should hang up and call the sheriff’s office directly. Additionally, anyone who has suffered some of financial loss due to this type of call should contact the sheriff’s office at 252-357-0210.
