Greenville Fire/Rescue points to benefits, dangers of space heaters

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, millions of people across the country rely on space heaters to keep warm in their homes, and even on their jobs. And now that it’s getting cooler, you may be a part of that million, but it’s still good to remember that they can be dangerous if not used correctly.

The proper placement of space heaters is critical as some instances have caused fires and even deaths. That is why  Greenville Fire/Rescue is warning the community, especially at this time of year.

“They’re for use when they are in attendance by the occupant of the home, so never leave them unattended, always make sure you plug them directly into the receptacle and not using an extension cord,” said Pitt County Fire Marshall Jay Morris.

Heating is the second leading cause of home fires behind cooking, and according to the CPDC’s most recent statistics, about 1,700 house fires happened between 2017 and 2019 due to a space heater. With about 80 fatalities on record and 160 injuries in the United States, a lot of these fires were caused by using an extension cord or a surge protector.

“People don’t have enough receptacles in the home, so they use an extension cord, and it is not designed to carry that much current,” Morris said.

Morris also said to inspect the space heater for any damages prior to use. When in use, refrain from having your items such as bedding, curtains, or anything for that matter in proximity. He said it should be at least three feet clear from the space heater.

“Probably 90 percent of the time it’s misused. It’s always something was on top of it,” said Morris.

Another suggestion by Greenville Fire/Rescue is to install carbon monoxide detectors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke alarms in your home to help save your life.
