PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. (WGHP) — Crews are currently searching for a person who was reported missing on the Yadkin River on Sunday afternoon.

Surry County EMS has confirmed to FOX8 that they and the Yadkin Rescue Squad are searching for a missing person on the river and that they went missing sometime Sunday afternoon.

At around 12:47 p.m. on Sunday, The Surry County Sheriff’s Office says that first responders came to the juncture of the Aratat River and the Yadkin River in connection to a potential water rescue in the area of Siloam.

Surry County deputies and the Pilot Moutain Rescue Squad received the call.

Deputies say that a 44-year-old man entered the water to help some family members who were struggling in the river. The man was able to assist his family members, however, he did not resurface.

First responders then requested assistance from the Dobson Rescue Squad, Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Elkin Rescue Squad, Shoals Volunteer Fire Department, Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department, Arlington Volunteer Fire Department, Fall Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Yadkin County EMS, Stokes County EMS, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the North Carolina Parks Service.

Crews are still searching for the man. However, investigators say the search is currently being considered a “search and recovery.”

Scott Hudson, with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, says that water equipment such as boats and aerial equipment such as drones have been deployed in the search effort.

There is no further information available at this time.
