OCRACOKE, N.C. (WAVY) – One man is dead and one woman is injured following a crash on NC12 in Ocracoke Tuesday morning.

Officials said shortly before 11 a.m., 61-year-old Warren Howard Frantz and his wife, Janet Frantz, were in a single-vehicle crash while traveling north on Highway 12 just past the Pony Pens.

Frantz’s car, a 2022 Chevy Suburban, ended up in the sand dunes on NC12. Shortly after the crash, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) closed NC12 between the ferry terminals and the Pony Pens due to flooding conditions.

According to officials, Frantz and his wife were attempting to catch the 11 a.m. ferry to Hatteras.

Janet Frantz was reported to have minor injuries following the crash.

The cause of the crash and cause of death are still under investigation.
