CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) — The Cape Hatteras National Seashore shared a video of something quite rare to see.

The video, taken near Ramp 23 on Hatteras Island on June 23, shows a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle covering up her nest. The Kemp’s ridley is the smallest species of sea turtle and the most endangered.

These sea turtles nest during the day unlike other sea turtles species, and they have a unique method of covering their eggs.

Kemps ridley sea turtles not only uses their flippers like other sea turtles, they move their bodies in a side-to-side shuffle over of the nest. Cape Hatteras calls this the “Kemp’s ridley dance.”
