VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Old Dominion University Alumni Association (ODUAA) is set to host the sixth annual Monarch Cobia Classic fishing tournament starting on Thursday.
The event will run from July 11-13 and will kick off at 7:30 p.m. with a Captains’ Meeting at ODU’s Sailing Center, located at 4551 Powhatan Avenue.
Participants will be able to compete for cash prizes, reels, rods, outdoor equipment, gift cards and more.
This year’s event will consist of two days of fishing starting at 6 a.m., and will end with a dock party on Saturday at ODU’s Sailing Center. Those not registered in the competition will be able to purchase tickets for the dock party for $50.
Weigh stations for the tournament will be located at Long Bay Pointe Bait and Tackle in Virginia Beach and Wallace’s Bait and Tackle in Hampton.
Proceeds from the classic will go towards the ODUAA Scholarship Fund, which has helped over 400 students since its inception.
“We want the community to know this tournament is open to anglers and friends from across the region,” director of alumni relations for the Office of Alumni Relations Kimberly Johnson said. “It’s a great opportunity to participate in one of the largest fishing tournaments on the east coast, have fun and support local college students. Last year we welcomed 63 teams and 17 sponsors. We hope to attract event more participants and supporters this year.”
Walk-up registration for the tournament will be available up until the start of the Captain’s Meeting at 7:30 p.m.
