NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Old Dominion University has suspended a fraternity from campus for five years due to hazing.
University spokeswoman Giovanna Genard said it was informed in early in December by the Third District of Omega Psi Phi of an investigation into alleged hazing at the Tau Lambda Chapter at ODU.
The university immediately suspended the chapter after hearing about the investigation, Genard said.
Genard said the Old Dominion University Police Department opened an investigation and Office of Student Conduct conducted a proceeding into the matter.
The proceeding found the chapter “more likely than not” committed several violations. This included requiring potential new members to consume or pouring hot sauce down their pants to simulate the discomfort of a sexually transmitted disease, Genard said.
Genard said potential members were also slapped on the face, back, chest and ribs while their arms were “hung on a board across their shoulders” in an open activity referred to as “crucifixion.”
Potential members were also said to have been pushed and shoved, and bruised by paddling or open-handed slaps.
Genard said the chapter is facing suspension through Feb.13, 2024.
In addition to Omega Psi Phi, the university’s shows several Greek life chapters have been placed on various forms of suspension.

At ODU, all students–including members of the Greek community–are expected to uphold and abide by the Code of Student Conduct,” Giovanna Genard, ODU Spokeswoman.
In Virginia, hazing is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. No student interviewed by ODU Police has wished to press charges to date, Genard said.
According to the university, students involved were held accountable for their actions. Their names will not be released due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
