YORK RIVER, Va. (WAVY) — Crews from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, responded to reports of an overturned boat in the York River on Friday, which officers believe may have been a hoax.
The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office say they were contacted around 8:30 p.m. on Friday about an overturned boat with occupants in the water near the Coleman Bridge.
The Virginia Marine Resources Commission responded to the area as well, officials say.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a similar call around the same time and dispatched a marine vessel and helicopter.
Crews searched the river and shoreline, but officials say they found nothing matching the report.
Officers believed the call may have been a “swatting call,” and will continue to investigate.
