NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)- The public is invited to view design plans and give more input on a project to expand the Interstate 64 corridor between Norfolk and Hampton on Wednesday and Thursday.
Plans include widening 10 miles of the roadway between Norfolk and Hampton and building a new Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.
The new tunnel and bridges will be eight lanes wide across the water. Crews also plan to replace or rebuild 32 bridges in the area.
The open houses will be held:
Wednesday, Aug. 15
Ocean View Elementary School
350 West Government Avenue – Norfolk
Thursday, Aug. 16
Saint Mary Star of the Sea School
14 North Willard Avenue – Hampton
Both meetings are scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and VDOT says the hearings will be an open-house format, without a formal presentation. There will be representatives there to talk about the project and answer questions.

Two teams are currently competing for build the new tunnel: Hampton Roads Capacity Constructors and Hampton Roads Connector Partners. They expect a contract to be awarded early next year.
The project could cost between $3.3 and $3.8 billion dollars. Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission, state taxes and federal taxes will cover the cost.
