HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Volunteers across the state collected 128,817 pounds of litter along the shoreline on the 30th Annual Clean the Bay Day.
According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), who puts on the statewide event each year, approximately 6,000 citizens participated and cleaned up 312 miles of shoreline during Saturday’s event.
Hampton Roads residents joined in on the efforts, cleaning shorelines in all seven cities and on the Eastern Shore.
Governor Ralph Northam participated Saturday morning in Cape Charles.
“I grew up on the Eastern Shore enjoying all that the Chesapeake Bay has to offer,” Northam said in a press release. “That’s why I’m proud to join thousands of Virginians today for this annual cleanup to help ensure the preservation and health of the Bay, our rivers, and our streams for years to come.”
The CBF says the most common items found during the cleanup were plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bags and cigarette butts.

10 On Your Side’s Lex Gray joined the efforts in Chic’s Beach, finding many cigarette butts and a large piece of metal.
A bike, tire, fishing rod and other items were collected in Deep Creek where 10 On Your Side producer Stephanie Duke Cooke participated.
