NELSONIA, Va. (WAVY) — A Parksley woman was killed and two other passengers were injured when their car ran off Nelsonia Road, overturned in a ditch, and came to rest at a utility pole on Friday morning.
According to the Virginia State Police, Julia Marie Vermeal, 28, of the 24000 block of Adelaide Street in Parksley, was driving a 1999 Ford Escort east on Nelsonia Road when it veered off the road just before Davis Lane, where there’s a slight curve in the road.
Firefighters pronounced Vermeal deceased at the scene. Two others in the car, Joseph Vermeal, 27, of Onley, and Robert Donovan, 24, of Parksley, didn’t suffer life-threatening injuries. State Police say none were wearing a seatbelt at the time, and alcohol was not considered a factor in the case.
That dangerous point of Nelsonia Road between Bloxom and Nelsonia is well known to many Accomack County residents. It’s where David Chew, a Bloxom volunteer firefighter, was killed in a firetruck crash while on duty back in 2012.
