PORTSMOUTH Va. (WAVY) — As August comes to an end, the heat returns with a vengeance. People are trying to survive the end of summer.
The excessive heat can cause sunburn, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
“We know we’ve had some cooler temperatures come in now that’s getting hot again,” said Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator for the city of Virginia Beach Renee McKinnon. “We just want to remind folks all the things they did during the summer.”
Libraries and community centers in Portsmouth and Norfolk are doubling as cooling centers for people to get away from the heat.
One tourist who is visiting from Oklahoma said he had been in and out of buildings to find cool spots.
“We try to get out early in the morning and do as much as we can before it gets too hot,” said tourist Randy Harris.
Virginia Beach Emergency Management said preparing for the heat is key to helping as many people as possible.
“Folks might not have expected these hot days coming here at the end of August, but they just need to go inside. There’s a lot of places on the Oceanfront or in the city as a whole, they can go inside and get some relief from the heat,” said McKinnon.
Whether you are a local or a tourist, the advice from the experts is the same — if you have to be outside make sure to hydrate, stay in the shade, and if possible, find places that have AC.
