Police: 3 involved in high speed chase of stolen vehicle hit pole, then tried to run

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A high speed chase that started on Route 58 in Suffolk ended Friday morning shortly after a stolen vehicle crashed into a utility pole.

After hitting the pole, three people inside the car took off on foot, according to Virginia State Police.

Both the driver of the stolen vehicle and the front-seat passenger were detained, but a female passenger in the back seat was able to get away.

The driver, Leonra Douglas, has been charged with felony eluding, reckless driving, expired registration and possession of a stolen vehicle. Police haven’t said whether the front-seat passenger will face charges.

Police say the chase started around 11:08 a.m. when officers tried to stop a white Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen. The Camry took off heading west on Route 58, reaching speeds of over 100 mph.

The Camry then got off at the Downtown Suffolk exit at Portsmouth Boulevard and ran through a red light before Douglas lost control, sideswiping a mini van and striking the utility pole.
