PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man suspected of shooting into a house tried to escape police for nearly an hour by leading a pursuit through Portsmouth and Norfolk before crashing on Interstate 264 Sunday night.
Portsmouth police say it began around 9 p.m. in the 100 block of Elm Avenue when the suspect shot into a house from a car.
After police located the suspected vehicle near Parkview Avenue and Spratley Street, they attempted to pull it over. The suspect refused to pull over and attempted to escape from police.
The chase continued through the Downtown Tunnel to Norfolk, then onto Military Highway. At this point, Norfolk police and Virginia State Police got involved.
Police say the suspect continued through Norfolk before getting back on I-264 and going back through the tunnel. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed in the westbound lanes of I-264 near Greenwood Drive.
According to VDOT’s 511 Hampton Roads twitter, the westbound lanes of I-264 were closed for a little over an hour while the incident continued.
The suspect driving the vehicle was transported to a local hospital for his injuries after the crash, but he is expected to live.
He has not been formally charged with anything at this time.
