NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News police officer shot a suspect Saturday afternoon in the Magruder section of the city.
Emergency dispatchers received a call around noon for an officer conducting a traffic stop in the 1100 block of 21st Street with no front vehicle tag.
Police say the driver got out of the vehicle, seen being towed in the video below, and the officer began chasing the suspect to the 1000 block of 20th Street.
The officer fired his “department issued duty weapon” and shot the suspect, according to the Newport News Police Department.
Police say the 33-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. The person was in stable condition at last check.
Officers say they found the suspect’s gun at the scene where shots were fired.
James Taliaffero, who lives on the street, said, “I heard three shots. I looked out the window and the door I didn’t see anything. Then a few minutes later I saw the police cars coming.”
The officer was not injured during this incident and has been placed on administrative leave at this time, which is standard for officer-involved shooting incidents, according to Newport News Police spokesperson B.J. Maynard.
The incident is currently under criminal and administration investigation.
