NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Three middle school students could face charges after police say a Norfolk resident’s SUV was stolen and crashed Friday morning.

Norfolk police were called to a home the 2300 block of Grandy Avenue, just off Ballentine Boulevard, around 7:45 a.m. after a car was reported stolen.

The owner of a 2008 Hyundai Verzcruz told officers he had left the car running and unattended in his driveway. However, the car was gone when he went back outside.

Minutes later, dispatch received several calls about a vehicle being driven erratically near Harrell Avenue and Dana Street — less than half a mile away from Grandy Avenue. The SUV came to a rest in the bushes of a front yard, after it had struck a trash can and sideswiped a parked van.

Police said witnesses told officers three people got out of the SUV and got on a Norfolk Public Schools bus headed for Azalea Garden Middle School. No injuries were reported.

The students were detained by a school resource officer.

Charges are pending the completion of an investigation, police said.
