NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A Smithfield man has been arrested after police say he attempted to break into a business and then crossed the street and attempted to rob a convenience store clerk of her car keys.

Lundy Riley, 29, had his two-year-old son with him during the alleged crimes, according to police. The child was not injured.

Police say they were called to All Auto Repair on Warwick Boulevard at 3:33 a.m. on Aug. 5 after the owner reported the burglary alarm was going off.

At the same time, police say, they were across the street at the 7-Eleven with Riley already in custody. 

Officers say Riley attempted to break into All Auto Repair around 3 a.m. He then attempted to rob a clerk at 7-Eleven of her car keys and assaulted a man in an unsuccessful attempt to take his car keys, as well.

Riley is charged with robbery, burglary and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
