Biography: DeGeorges hails from a family of long-time farmers and orchardists in Maryland. The youngest of four sons raised in Montgomery County, he earned a BA in marketing and business administration from Austin Peay University. After working at Phillip Morris and as an independent seafood salesman in Oregon, he returned to the Washington, DC, area and began a warehouse job for a family-owned rubber supply company. He advanced to become a salesman, business partner, and expert in the design and sales of conveyor systems and supplies for road construction, mining, paper mills, and power plants. He retired in 2018 after 40 years in the industry.
Why are you running for this office?
The long-time incumbent appears to have an allegiance with special interests rather than adequately representing the interests of his constituents.
What is the most important issue facing Accomack County, and what is your position on it?
The most important issue is future economic development in the county. We should do all that we can to encourage business to move to the county, including improving schools, security, and infrastructure.
What it the top challenge facing your district, and how would you address it?
The top challenge is the county government is not responsive to the needs of District 2 citizens in the larger county picture. I would put more resources at the disposal of the citizens to enable them to have more influence.
How do you feel about the politicization of public education?
Education should focus on reading, writing, and arithmetic. Schools should first return to providing a basic educational foundation. Other issues that have been politicized should be handled after accomplishing the first goal.
What ordinances or resolutions would you plan to sponsor in your first year?
I would support establishment of regulations that would cap annual real estate tax increases at 3%, regardless of higher property assessments, so residents, especially those on fixed incomes, are not faced with the unfair burden of increases of as much as 30%, as has happened recently in parts of the county.
What is your view on unlimited campaign contributions?
Should that change? As long there is disclosure and no expectation of preferential treatment, I don’t see it as a problem. My campaign is fully self-funded.
How will you still value constituents and politicians with whom you disagree?
I have always considered myself to be a great compromiser. I always try to work with people with differing views to find a common ground that is acceptable to all parties.
