HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — Washington County Delegate Brooke Grossman (D – 2B), whose district comprises Hagerstown, is behind a bill in the Maryland state legislature that will change the names of highways referencing soldiers of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Grossman says the federal government has renamed military bases to honor prominent African Americans in U.S. history. She would like to see, for instance, renaming streets like Robert E. Lee Drive in Sharpsburg.
“This isn’t who we are,” said Grossman. “That is not who we are as a country. It is not the sentiment I think people want to feel when they are coming into those institutions or onto those campuses. We want to be welcoming for everyone.”
Grossman said she will introduce her bill in the upcoming session of the Maryland General Assembly.
