CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – A Portsmouth police officer walked into a grocery store to pick up dinner and ended up saving a life while he was there.
It happened Thursday evening at Harris Teeter off Greenbriar Parkway in Chesapeake.
We’re told a man was sampling some food at the deli when it got lodged in his throat, blocking his airway.
Another customer ran over to Lt. Bryant Hall, who just so happened to be in the store picking up pizza.
He quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver and saved the man’s life.
“I just thank God that I could breathe again and it was just a miracle that the officer was here at the right time” said the man, who didn’t want to be identified by name.
“I just saw the panic in the other guy’s face and he was motioning for me to come over and I just went and did what I had to do,” Lt. Hall said. “It’s times like this that make everything you go through as a police officer worth it.”
Medics came to the store and checked on the man. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt.
