PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — With widespread rain moving through and then a blast of cold air, transportation officials warn of any wet surfaces causing black ice.

While main and secondary roads shouldn’t have an issue, sidewalks or neighborhoods that have puddles could freeze and cause patchy black ice.

Although Hampton Roads is not likely to see any action, surrounding areas are at a pretty high risk of getting icy.

In an updated forecast, Meteorologist Casey Lehecka says that the chance of icy conditions has gone way down.

In that blog, she says that the black ice won’t be the main concern, what really is going to affect everyone is the single-digit wind chill values.

Temperatures are expected to plummet from near 60 degrees to the mid-30s in the afternoon.

With air and ground temperatures expected to stay above freezing before the cold air arrives Sunday night, most precipitation should evaporate before it freezes.

However, there’s still a chance that anything remaining can “flash freeze.”

Officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation said crews will be treating the interstates, overpasses and bridges with salt to prevent ice from forming once the rain ends.

VDOT also said drivers should avoid travel overnight Sunday and Monday morning if possible.
