NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News school bus assistant is facing charges after police say she was accused of assaulting a student.

Newport News police say a reported was filed regarding an alleged incident that happened May 18 on a Newport News Public Schools bus. 

Police say it was reported a 12-year-old student was upset over an altercation with two other students, and started to kick the wall next to his seat.

The school bus assistant, 48-year-old Linda Ann Smith, reportedly went up to the boy and tried to get him to stop kicking. Police say it was reported that Smith assaulted the boy during this encounter.

Smith was arrested nine days later on charges of assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
