Shaun Brown announces intent to run for congress amid fraud charges

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton businesswoman Shaun Brown officially announced Thursday that she plans to run for the 2nd congressional district seat without seeking the Democratic Primary.

Brown said in a press release, “I believe the people of the 2nd congressional district should have a voice in determining who represents them. I will be that voice.”

Rep. Scott Taylor defeated Brown in 2016 when she ran as a Democratic candidate for the 2nd District.

Brown is currently facing charges of fraud for allegedly lying about feeding needy children and stealing from the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

She was indicted on those charges back in December and has pleaded not guilty.

Brown’s next court appearance will be on June 20. She faces a maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted.
