NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Construction on the Virginia-Class Submarine Montana is moving along.
Workers and engineers at Newport News shipbuilding held a celebration to authenticate the keel of the submarine Wednesday.
A member of the Blackfeet Nation from Montana came to perform a Native American blessing of the ship.
The Montana will be the most advanced submarine in the Navy’s fleet.
Montana (SSN 794) is the 21st ship of the Virginia-class and the 10th that will be delivered by
Newport News. The submarine currently is about 46 percent complete. Two of its crew members
hail from the state of Montana.
It’s set to be launched sometime in 2020.
