SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Friends of 47-year-old Tony Lundy say he was shot Thursday right outside of a local barbershop in downtown Suffolk.
Police say around 10:34 Thursday morning Lundy was shot.
They’ve arrested 44-year-old Michael Jermell Hatton for the shooting.
10 On Your Side was at the scene after the shooting and spoke with witnesses who know him.
“I was standing right on the inside of the door he was standing right there near the unisex sign,” said witness Harvey Clark.
Clark says both Lundy and Hatton were inside a barber shop at the corner of Liberty and E. Washington Street, and he last heard them speaking about the late Aretha Franklin.
Police say at some point the two began arguing, and then their fight got physical.
Hatton shot Lundy at least once.
Clark says he ran over to help Lundy after hearing the shots.
“It happened on the sidewalk and he crawled to the street cause we kept cold towels on him,” said Clark.
Another man who didn’t want to be identified was working near by and also rushed out.
“I heard a couple gun shots, I came out the barbershop and came out the street and saw my friend laying on the sidewalk and he called out my name,” he said.
Both witnesses say they had coached Lundy in basketball years ago, something he’s known for in Suffolk. He was a 1989 state player of the year.
“I was Tony’s first basketball coach when Tony was about 11 or 12 years old. I followed Tony up all the way through his career, all the way up to today because he’s a youth counselor,” said Clark.
Police say Lundy is in critical condition.
