SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A small plane crashed in Suffolk, Saturday afternoon around 2:51 p.m.

At 3:25 p.m., Suffolk Fire and Rescue tweeted that a small plane crashed at 591 North Liberty Spring Road.

The tweet indicated that one person was found pinned inside the plane and was extricated by rescue crews.

But before that, a neighbor said he was the first one to help the pilot.

“I just rendered first aid if he needed it but he was pretty conscious and aware of what was going on. He did a lot by just staying calm and waiting for emergency responders to get here,” said George Best.

According to the Virginia State Police, the pilot suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Best, a firefighter with Suffolk Fire and Rescue said at that moment, all of his training kicked in.

“We train for stuff like this so it was just second nature. It’s a car accident with wings.”

He said it wasn’t what he expected to happen right in his backyard.

“It’s Whaleyville. It’s quiet out here normally, usually very uneventful.”

The patient was transported to a hospital by the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance.

Troopers are on the scene investigating the incident.

We are working to learn more about what caused the crash.
