PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — One person was killed in a crash Thursday morning as troopers responded to several crashes on area interstates amid icy road conditions.

Virginia State Police said in a news release troopers responded to multi-vehicle crashes on Interstate 64 eastbound at Settlers Landing Road — where five crashes happened starting just before 4 a.m.

One of those crashes, just before 4 a.m., resulted in a fatality. The driver of a 2007 Nissan Frontier, Reginald K. Mayfield, lost control due to icy conditions, ran off the road and struck a guardrail, police say. It then swerved back into the road and was struck by a Ford F-250.

Police say Nissan came to rest in the middle of the I-64 lanes and the Ford came to rest on the shoulder and travel lane. The driver of the F-250, Rashad Sawyer, exited the truck to check on the driver of the Nissan, Reginald K. Mayfield, when a Ford Fusion struck the truck and Sawyer, who was outside his vehicle.

Both Mayfield and Sawyer were taken the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and Mayfield later died. Sawyer’s injuries are considered major.

Mayfield, 62, was from the 300 block of Wexford Drive in Virginia Beach, police say.

PENINSULA TRAFFIC

State police said icy conditions caused a crash in the northbound lanes of U.S. 17 on the Coleman Bridge just before 6:15 a.m.

A preliminary investigation found a Chevrolet pickup truck hauling a boat jackknifed while crossing the bridge, which dislodged the boat from the trailer. The incident initially closed all northbound lanes.

State police dispatch tells WAVY.com a school bus was involved in a crash on I-64 in Hampton, the Hampton Roads Center Parkway. It’s unclear whether any students were on board.

The icy conditions impacted traffic primary roads and secondary roads.

Newport News police said there was black ice in several spots throughout the city. Crashes were reported on multiple roads, including Fort Eustis Boulevard, Denbigh Boulevard, Bland Boulevard and Oyster Point Road.

Several roads were blocked, according to police.
