VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A driver crashed into several vehicles near the Chesapeake-Virginia Beach city line Monday afternoon after troopers tried to pull over the vehicle, Virginia State Police say.
Virginia State Police said troopers saw a a 2005 Mitsubishi Gallant that was “involved in suspicious activity” and tried to make contact with the driver just after 1 p.m.
Before troopers could try and stop the driver, he took off at a high rate of speed, and went between two lines of vehicles that were sitting at a traffic light at the intersection of Military Highway and Indian River Road in Virginia Beach, damaging six cars.
State police said the driver, 30-year-old Dominique Cherry, of Norfolk, is charged with hit-and-run and eluding.
Cherry crashed into a 1997 Ford F150, 2017 Nissan Frontier, 2014 Ford F150, 2011 GMCSierra, 2018 Lincoln MKC and a 2009 Chevy Malibu, according to state police.
“We were sitting here at the light and a car just came in between all the vehicles and just smashed into everybody,” said Ashley Fain.
State police said the crash resulted in minor injuries.
“I’m a little bit shaken up,” said Fain.
Witnesses say the car crashed into the curb on Indian River Road, but the driver got out and started running. Police were not far behind.
Fain said, “They had their vests on and they had parked right over there on the side and went running after him. We had to point out where he was going, because him and his girl went running in between the vehicles over there trying to hide.”
Linda Kuehn with Virginia Beach police said they received a call about the incident around 1:15 p.m. Officers with Chesapeake and Virginia Beach responded to the scene, along with troopers.
