SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Suffolk man was sentenced to 60 days in prison after being convicted on more than two dozen animal cruelty-related charges.

Court records show 25-year-old Jacob Richard Romes Chappell was found guilty early January of this year on 27 total counts which included 15 charges for animal cruelty and 11 charges of failure to care for animals.

Chapell will serve 60 days in prison and will also serve 44 years of unsupervised probation.

Chappel was arrested last October after Suffolk Animal Control was sent to a residence in Mineral Spring Road for a welfare check on dogs at the location.

When they got to the location, authorities found a dead dog inside one of the pens next to the home, as well as a dog that was experiencing heat-related problems and could barely stand.

Several more dogs were found in pens near the home with little or no shelter and limited access to water during extreme heat conditions.

Animal Control seized the dogs so they could be treated and later put up for adoption.
