VIRGINIA BEACH Va. (WAVY) —- Students at Centerville Elementary School received a major surprise Thursday during their field day activities.
The gift was in the form of a superhero, one they call dad. Michael Mabey traded one hero’s uniform for another and surprised his three children after a seven-month deployment with the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Superheroes possess supernatural powers, battling supervillans, like the women or men in uniform dedicating their life to protecting the public.
“I missed Thanksgiving, Christmas, I left on one birthday and I’m coming back on another,” said Mabey.
His oldest son turns 7 tomorrow.
“Absolutely amazing to see them and know that I’m here a lot longer now,” said Mabey. “They were shocked, I don’t think they knew what to do.”
Mabey is a true Captain America, and someone who embodies what this dad does. He is someone who has spent his life protecting our freedom.
“It’s good to be home.”
