NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two suspects have been arrested in connection to the robbery of an armored truck in Norfolk that police say was an inside job.
Norfolk police said in a news release Thursday the staged robbery happened in the 7600 block of Granby Street on March 19.
A Brink’s employee told detectives a man wearing a black motorcycle helmet robbed him at gunpoint and stole cash from the truck, police said.
10 On Your side obtained surveillance video of the crime from a nearby business. The business owner said as he watched the video he thought, “How dumb can you be? Seriously, how did they think they were going to get away with this?”
In the video, you see a man with a motorcyle helmet approach the truck on the side where the driver is and then he walks away with a blue bin.
The Brink’s employee then leaves the parking lot and returns a couple of minutes later. He walks back into a business and then walks out to the truck.
It’s around that time police got the call for a robbery.
Police spokesperson Daniel Hudson told 10 OnYour Side he could not confirm whether that call came from the Brink’s employee.
Norfolk Detectives worked with FBI agents and a U.S. Marshals task force to investigate the robbery.
Police said in the release it was determined the Brink’s employee was an accomplice and “helped devise the fake robbery … to conceal the stealing of a large amount of cash.”
Police said detectives have not stated how much money was stolen or whether the money has been recovered.
The employee, 26-year-old Joshua Mercado, of Chesapeake, is charged with grand larceny, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, embezzlement, conspiracy to commit embezzlement and obstruction of justice: false police report.
Police charged 26-year-old Keith Doughty, also of Chesapeake, with robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, wearing a mask, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit embezzlement.
Both men are being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond.
