Suspect in custody for Hampton homicide

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is dead after a shooting in Hampton on Wednesday, police say. 

Hampton dispatchers say the call for the shooting came in just before noon. It happened in the 1000 block of E. Pembroke Avenue. 


Hampton police say they found 36-year-old Kelly Phillips, a Hampton resident, lying down with gunshot wounds when they arrived on the scene. 

Shortly after the Phillips was transported to a local hospital for treatment, she was pronounced dead. 

Preliminary investigation has revealed that 62-year old Gregory Burwell and Phillips, were known to each other. A physical confrontation had occurred in the first block of North Cypress Street and Burwell displayed a firearm and shot the victim.

Burwell was taken into custody this afternoon. He has been charged with one count of second degree murder, one count of reckless handling of a firearm, one count of possession of a firearm by a violent convicted felon, and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

He remains in the custody of the Hampton City Jail.
