CAMDEN, N.C. (WAVY) – A 17-year-old is facing charges for an alleged sexual assault at Camden County High School in North Carolina.

Investigators say the alleged incident happened on May 4 in an empty classroom at the school.  A 15-year-old girl reported to the Sheriff’s Office that she had been sexually assaulted.

The Sheriff’s Office investigated and charged the teen with sexual battery. He was served the warrants on May 10 and released on bond.

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office says more charges are possible in this case.

Dr. Joe Ferrell, the district’s superintendent, released a statement on the alleged incident Wednesday morning. It said in part:

Although I cannot comment on or reveal details about any individual case, I can say the recent complaint mentioned in social media has been handled in accordance with Board police by school administration. Appropriate actions have been taken to protect the accuser. Any suggestion that disciplinary action has been withheld because of the time remaining this semester is false.”
