Teen charged with murder in connection to death of 18-year-old in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection to the shooting death of an 18-year-old man early Sunday morning.

According to Portsmouth Police, they responded to Buchanan Avenue around 1:50 a.m. for a report of a gunshot victim.

When officers arrived, they located a man with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He passed away before medics could transport him to a local hospital.

Police later identified the victim as Tyquan Charles of Norfolk.

A short time later, police say a juvenile male walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Police said they believed the homicide and this gunshot victim were related.

The 16-year-old was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and underage possession of a firearm, according to Lieutenant B.K. Hall with Portsmouth Police.

Hall did not say whether or not the teenager that was arrested was the same juvenile who went to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
