NORFOLK, Va (WAVY) — Military families from all over Hampton Roads came to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story to get into the holiday spirit.
Trees for Troops, a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation in conjunction with FedEx, brings fresh cut trees to military families for free.
Around 300 trees were put on display for families to choose from, but it didn’t take long for the Hopkins family to find the right one.
“It looks the biggest and so we chose it,” said Mackenzie Hopkins.
“It’s like big and large and it’s like, standing upwards and it could like be huge enough,” chimed in Esek Hopkins.
What made the day even more special for the Hopkins family, this is the first year they’ve been able to get a real tree with their dad. He’s been deployed for the last few years during the holidays, so it was a fun experience to pick a tree as a family.
On average, Trees for Troops delivers 17,000 real Christmas trees to 60 plus military bases throughout the U.S. and overseas.
Approximately 250 trees are shipped overseas for troops in the Middle East. The rest are distributed to military families through bases throughout the United States.
