NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Two men were sentenced on Friday in connection to meth trafficking and firearm convictions, police said.

According to a release, in December of 2023, Norfolk officers conducted a controlled drug purchase from 43-year-old Javou Jameil Smith while at the house of 41-year-old Brian Ricardo Hinton, who was there at the time of the purchase.

During the purchase, police said Smith sold 452 grams of methamphetamine and was in possession of a firearm.

On Dec. 13, Chesapeake officers executed a search warrant at Smith’s residence. When officers arrived, Smith, who already had active warrants in Virginia Beach, attempted to flee the scene, but was apprehended shortly afterwards.

After searching Smith, investigators recovered 6.05 grams of meth and approximately one gram of fentanyl, which was individually packaged for sale. A search of Smith’s residence uncovered 57 packets containing fentanyl, five packets containing fentanyl and Xylazine, five tablets containing para-fluorofentanyl, cocaine and fentanyl, a loaded firearm, digital scales and materials for the packaging and distribution of drugs.

Police then conducted a search of Hinton’s home, where they found a safe containing a loaded firearm magazine, a bag with 118 multi-colored tablets containing meth, a bag of 13.9 grams of meth, 29 bags of meth — 10 of which were tested and confirmed to be 278 grams, with the remainder totaling 533.34 grams — a firearm, ammunition, packaging materials and digital scales.

On June 14, 2024, Smith pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm during a trafficking crime. On Nov. 5, he was sentenced to serve 17 years and six months in prison.
