VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Two people had to be rescued when their SUV got stuck in rising waters Monday afternoon in southern Virginia Beach.
The SUV was stuck on Muddy Creek Road near Shipps Bay around 4:30 p.m., according to the Virginia Beach Fire Department. Art Kohn with the VBFD says one the department’s four high water vehicles was used and no one was injured.
The driver was trying to turn around from a flooded portion of the secluded road when the SUV got stuck in a ditch hidden by the rising water.
Flooding has been reported throughout southern Virginia Beach, according to 10 On Your Side’s Brett Hall. The VBFD warns people that floodwaters are expected to continue to rise as winds continue to blow in from the south around the Back Bay area. They urge drivers to stay off roads around the area until waters subside.
As of 4 p.m. Virginia Beach reported these roads closed:
- Indian River Road from Speed Fentress Bridge to Princess Anne Road
- Pleasant Ridge Road from Charity Neck Road to Muddy Creek Road
- Muddy Creek Road from Charity Neck Road to Nanneys Creek Rd
- Nanneys Creek Road from Charity Neck Road to Mill Landing Road
- New Bridge Road from Ashville Bridge Creek Educational Center Access to Sandbridge Road
- Sandbridge Road from New Bridge Road to Siebert Realty/Sandbridge Realty
- Pungo Ferry Road from Princess Anne Road to Blackwater Road
- West Neck Road from West Landing to Princess Anne Road
High water signs are being posted at these locations:
• New Bridge Road at the church on Sandbridge Road between New Bridge and Banks (Virginia Beach officials say this road is still passable)
• 700 Block of Sandbridge Road (Virginia Beach officials say this road is still passable)
