VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The vote was unanimous as Virginia Beach City Council passed the city’s 2019 spending plan.
The budget includes a 2 percent raise for city and school employees, and continues the expansion of full-day kindergarten.
It does not increase personal property tax or other previously suggested fees.
The budget also gives just under $2.5 million for changes to Atlantic Avenue at the Oceanfront, stretching from 40th Street to Pacific Avenue.
The plan includes eliminating an intersection, putting a cul-de-sac at the Cavalier Hotel and the widening of 40th Street for left turn lanes.
$6 million was also allocated for drainage improvements to the Asheville Park neighborhood, which lies between Redmill and Pungo.
Pier improvements
10 On Your Side also got an update on the Oceanfront pier project at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
Three companies have placed bids:
- Richard Maddox of the Seagate Development Corporation — he owns the Dairy Queen on 17th Street
- Virginia Beach Pier Place Development LLC
- Virginia Beach Economic Development Authority
This is the second round of bidding. The city restarted the process in March after a group of families that own the current fishing pier withdrew their bid.
