VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A homeless man suffered smoke inhalation after firefighters say he started a fire in sewers near Naval Air Station Oceana on Tuesday afternoon.

Art Kohn with the Virginia Beach Fire Department says the man apparently climbed down into the sewer and started a fire to stay warm. Someone saw smoke coming from the storm drain on Oceana Blvd. near the observation parking lot just before 2:20 p.m. and called 911.

Kohn says the man was suffering from smoke inhalation when he was removed from the sewer and the department’s Technical Rescue Team was sent down to make sure the fire was out and that no other people were in the sewer.

There’s no threat to the base, Kohn says.
