RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — VDOT officials say they are aware of an issue that resulted in many EZ pass customers being overcharged and are working to refund everyone who was affected.
Several customers reached out to 8News on Friday reporting unauthorized charges — some exceeding $1,000 — being docked from their bank account and paid to E-ZPass.
A VDOT spokesperson told 8News that the E-ZPass Virginia website experienced a technical glitch last week.
Since then, customers who tried to replenish their accounts used a credit or debit card received an error message saying the transaction failed. Some of those customers who repeatedly tried to process the transaction were charged each time — even though the transaction seemingly declined.
The spokesperson said the issue has since been resolved, and that VDOT and E-ZPass Virginia are in the process of reimbursing all affected accounts and working with banks on behalf of any customers who suffered an overdraft as a result of the transaction.
Anyone still having issues should contact the E-ZPass Virginia customer service desk at 877-762-7824.
