NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The recently christened Virginia-class submarine Delaware was launched into the water for the first time last week.
Huntington Ingalls Industries said in a news release the submarine was moved from a construction facility and into a floating dry dock during a three-day process that began on Dec. 12.
The dry dock was submerged — and the sub was then launched into the James River.
From there, the Delaware went to Newport News Shipbuilding’s submarine pier for final outfitting, testing and crew certification.
Dave Bolcar, Newport News’ vice president of submarine construction, said in a statement, “With this significant key event behind us, we look forward to completing construction and sea trials next year so this great warship can join the fleet and defend our nation.”
Delaware was christened in a mid-October ceremony at the shipyard. Former second lady Dr. Jill Biden, wife of former Vice President Joe Biden, is the ship’s sponsor.
The new attack sub is expected to be delivered to the U.S. Navy in 2019.
