VIDEO: Waterspout forms in Kill Devil Hills, damages Avalon Pier

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — Sunday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. a waterspout damaged the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills.

Resident Jared Thompson told 10 On Your Side he was under the pier, escaping the rain, when the storm hit.

“All of a sudden it just swept everything off of the beach and everything landed in the water,” Thompson said. “It just sucked everything out like a vacuum.”

He said with all of the destruction he saw, it’s a miracle no one was hurt.

“A skin board slammed into somebody’s leg and broke in half,” Thompson said. “And I don’t know how he didn’t get hurt.”

He told 10 On Your Side in all his years living on the Outer Banks, he’s never seen anything like what happened Sunday.

“I thought it was just a gust of wind. I grew up down here. I’m 51 years old. I’ve seen a lot of weird things but that was really weird.”
