FAIRFAX, Va. (DC News Now) — City of Fairfax police said a man assaulted two staff members of Congressman Gerry Connolly with a metal baseball bat Monday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched at 10:59 a.m. to 10680 Main Street #140, the location of Connolly’s office.

Two staff members were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Connolly said an outreach director was hit on the head and an intern on her first day was struck in the side.

An officer arrived within three minutes of the call and two minutes after arriving, arrested Xuan Kha Tran Pham, 49, of Fairfax.

An officer had a minor injury as a result of the incident.

United States Capitol Police (USCP) said it was working with the City of Fairfax Police Department. It added that investigators didn’t have information indicating Pham was known to USCP prior to Monday. He faces charges of Aggravated Malicious Wounding and Malicious Wounding.

Connolly serves as representative of Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. He was first elected in 2008. Connolly is a member of the Democratic Party.

Connolly released a statement following the incident saying:

“This morning, an individual entered my District Office armed with a baseball bat and asked for me before committing an act of violence against two members of my staff. The individual is in police custody and both members of my team were transferred to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Right now, our focus is on ensuring they are receiving the care they need. We are incredibly thankful to the City of Fairfax Police Department and emergency medical professionals for their quick response.”

“I have the best team in Congress. My District Office staff make themselves available to constituents and members of the public every day. The thought that someone would take advantage of my staff’s accessibility to commit an act of violence is unconscionable and devastating.”

Court records for Fairfax County General District Court showed that Pham had charges related to an incident that took place on Jan. 12, 2022. Those charges included assault on a law enforcement officer as well as disarming law enforcement of a stun gun.
