RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A 16-year-old suspect accused of shooting an officer with the Richmond Police Department in the hand Thursday night has turned himself in to police.
According to Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, the 16-year-old turned himself in to the Chesterfield County Police Department on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 20 in connection to the shooting, which took place at 11:29 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19.
The teen is currently in custody in Richmond and is facing the following charges:
- Malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer
- Use of a firearm while committing a felony
- Possession of a firearm by a minor
- Possession of a concealed weapon
Richmond officers pulled over a vehicle in the 2300 block of Fairfield Avenue in the city’s East End after the driver reportedly ran a stop sign. After seeing what police described as “suspicious movements” inside, officers told the occupants to get out.
During the encounter, police said a male suspect — identified as the 16-year-old — fired a weapon and struck an officer in his hand. The officers did not return fire.

The driver of the vehicle reportedly drove away, heading east on Fairfield Avenue. Richmond Police Major Crimes detectives and U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force investigators responded and canvassed the area for information.
