PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Olympic Games are a chance for athletes across the world to showcase their skills as well make a name for themselves.

Every athlete competes hoping for the chance to take home a gold medal, but how many accomplish it? And for U.S.A. athletes, you may be wondering where these gold medalists come from.

California seems to be a gold medalist factory as athletes from the state have brought around 127 gold medals home, according to The Sports Geek. The next highest number is New York at 70, just over half of California. Meanwhile, Virginia ranks in the bottom half of the states at No. 27.

The Commonwealth has brought home nine gold medals since the start of the Olympic Games in 1896.
