NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One person is dead following a crash involving a train in New Kent County on Thursday evening.
According to Virginia State Police, officers were called to train tracks on Outpost Road near Rockahock Road around 5:45 p.m. The New Kent Sheriff’s Office said multiple people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
In addition to state police, CSX Police, Amtrak Police, New Kent Fire and Rescue, and New Kent County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash.
A person who is staying at the Rockahock Campgrounds, near where the crash happened, told 8News on Friday that they witnessed the crash.
Kevin Menius along with other neighbors in the area said the intersection is problematic and simply unsafe.
“You can’t see very far down the tracks where the stop sign is,” Menius said. “I didn’t see anything and went through. I got maybe 100 feet past the track and a train flew by. That’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to getting hit by a train. it scared me.”
There is crossing signs at the intersection but no crossing arms.
The owner of the Rockahock campgrounds told 8News that CSX won’t put a crossarm at the intersection because it is a private road. He also said that CSX agreed to go slower on the track and lay on the horn, but that hasn’t happened.
