RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — All Richmond Public Schools (RPS) students will need to have clear backpacks starting this summer after a decision by the Richmond City School Board.

Members of the Richmond City School Board voted Monday, June 3 to mandate clear backpacks for all students starting July 1.

This decision comes around a year after two incidents which resulted in three RPS students being shot — one fatally.

On April 27, 2023, two George Wythe High School students were shot outside of the school and on June 6, 2023, 18-year-old Huguenot High School senior Shawn Jackson was shot and killed after the school’s graduation ceremony at the Altria Theater.
