RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC/WAVY) — Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy is resigning from her seat in the Virginia House of Delegates as she continues her campaign for governor.

Her resignation is effective Dec. 12, 2020.

“Today I’m announcing my plans to step down from the House of Delegates so that I can focus exclusively on building a people-powered, grassroots movement to lead Virginia into the future, Carroll Foy said in a tweet Tuesday morning. “I’m putting everything I have into this campaign, because our Commonwealth demands it.”

Carroll Foy (D-Woodbridge) announced her run for governor on May 27 and is one of several Democrats to announce they’re running. State Senator Jennifer McClellan and Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax have officially announced bids, and former Gov. Terry McAuliffe is also expected to formalize a run.

If elected for governor, she will be the first female governor of Virginia and the first Black woman to serve as governor in the entire United States.

Gov. Ralph Northam cannot run for reelection under Virginia law.

He did issue a writ of election Tuesday, though, declaring a special election for the Second House of Delegates District seat previously held by Foy. That special election will be held on January 5.

That’s the same day as the special election to fill the 90th District seat on the House of Delegates. Former Norfolk and Virginia Beach Del. Joe Lindsey, who represented the 90th District, recently resigned from that seat to take an appointment as a general district court judge in Norfolk.
